Carol had prepared an initial sketch of a winter scene and dabbed masking fluid using a "funny brush" made of rubber, She then soaked her paper (600gsm hot pressed) with water before laying down washes using Light Red, Raw Sienna and Ultramarine Blue. She then removed paint from the washes with a damp brush to leave pale areas where the trees would be painted, and removed more paint with a cotton bud where the pale winter sun would be.

Carol painted broad areas of colour for the rocks and then demonstrated using a credit card to scrape away paint to create the texture of these rocks.

Carol beginning to add trees to the scene.

Carol added tree shapes using Raw Umber then dropped in Light Red and Ultramarine while this was still wet for the dark side of the trees.

The finished painting, after Carol added snow using Ultramarine blue and rubbing off the masking fluid.

Carol gave us some tips on painting trees, cliffs and stone walls
For this summer tree, Carol first used yellow for the basic tree then dropped in additional colours on the dry edge. Then, using the same colours she added foliage using a well-loaded flat brush, then added darker lower foliage using Ultramarine Blue. She explained how to use a dry brush to drag from light colour to dark to create the impression of a a more rounded tree trunk.
